Getting started with the ALL Group in Pro Tools

On previous tutorials we have talked and demonstrated how to create Groups in Pro Tools, but did you know there is a group created by default once we create a session?

This group is called “ALL” and it comes disabled by default.

But, what is this “ALL” group?

Let’s demonstrate that!

  1. Open or create a new session in Pro Tools:

All Group in Pro Tools

2. Locate the Groups list:

All Group in Pro Tools

As you can see, this “ALL” group has been created by default and it is off.

3. Right click on the “ALL” group and select “Modify”:

All Group in Pro Tools

The first thing we detect is that there is no “Tracks” tab. The reason for this is that all the tracks from the session are part of this group.

This means that whatever attributes and configurations we apply to this group, will affect every single track of the session.

By default, the “ALL” group links the volume, mute and automation modes of the tracks.

4. Enable the “ALL” group by clicking on it:

All Group in Pro Tools

5. Open the Mix Window:

All Group in Pro Tools

6. Click and drag any fader:

All Group in Pro Tools

It can be seen how we dragged one fader, and they all moved down, because of the ALL group being enabled.

7. Now mute any of the tracks:

All Group in Pro Tools

As expected, all the tracks got muted, because the “ALL” group is enabled.

8. Now trying switching the automation mode of any of the tracks:

All Group in Pro Tools

As expected, we switched one track to “Write” mode, but all of them actually changed.

The “ALL” group works perfectly,

At this point, we have successfully explained the use of the All Group in Pro Tools.

Using Avid Pro Tools software to produce music would be ideal with one of our professionally designed PCAudioLabs Systems due our high-performance specifications in order to work with any of the Digital Audio Workstations supported.
