Getting started with how to Mute MIDI in Pro Tools

Pro Tools is a software that lets you produce, record, edit and mix audio as well as MIDI performances.

If you are a musician or producer, you will benefit from recording MIDI performances that you can use to trigger your favorite Virtual Instruments in your songs.

But let’s say you record your part and you want to “test” how it would sound if certain parts or notes were muted. Is this even possible?

Yes. Pro Tools lets you mute the whole MIDI track, or the MIDI event, or even muting note by note.

On this tutorial, we will learn How to Mute MIDI in Pro Tools:

 

 

METHOD #1: MUTE THE TRACK

  1. Create or open an existing Pro Tools session:

Make sure the Pro Tools session contains at least one track with MIDI information recorded:

2. Click on the MUTE button of the MIDI or Instrument track:

Once clicked, the MUTE button will light in orange, meaning it is MUTED. No information will be reproduced from this track.

METHOD #2: MUTE THE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS

  1. Click on the individual MIDI clip that you want to mute in order to select it:

2. Click on the top menu bar: Edit -> Mute Clips:

Once clicked, the MIDI clip will be muted and it will not reproduce any MIDI information.

It is easy to note it has been muted because it appears to be greyed out.

METHOD #3: MUTE INDIVIDUAL NOTES

  1. Create or open an existing Pro Tools session:

Make sure the Pro Tools session contains at least one track with MIDI information recorded:

2. Double click on the MIDI clip to open the MIDI editor:

3. Click on any of the notes you want to mute in order to select them:

The will appear highlighted as:

4. From the top menu bar, click on: Edit -> Mute Notes:

Once clicked, the selected notes will be muted.

It is easy to see they are muted because they appear to be greyed out.
