Distorted Guitar Tone in Ampire

Ampire is the ultimate guitar tone and gear emulation solution included in Studio One as one of their proprietary plugins.

This plugin is capable of emulating the amplifier, cabinet, microphones, pedals and even the tuner you would have as part of your guitar rig.

Today we are going to apply our knowledge in Ampire to obtain a commercial rock Distorted Guitar Tone.

Here we go!

  1. Open or create a new Studio One Song

For the purpose of this tutorial we have a Song that contains a single audio track with an electric guitar DI signal recorded to it.

Ampire is designed to be added as a plugin (insert) on tracks that only contain DI signals.

2. Add Ampire plugin to the DI guitar track (audio track):

So by default, the MCM800 amp is added, which is amazing for this task.

However, we will need to adjust some of the parameters.

Rock Distorted tones are known for being dirty but also intelligible.

That being said, we might need to reduce the low end a bit, crank the mids and maybe the treble too.

Try these settings:

  • Bass: 2
  • Middle: 7
  • Treble: 6.8
  • Presence: 5

3. Apply the previous settings to the EQ curve:

This definitively helped in getting a better-understanding distorted tone.

Now, let’s get a cabinet that matches our needs.

One of the best choices for distorted tones, is the 4×12 M65 cab.

4. Select the 4×12 M65 cab:

5. Open the microphone section:

6. Mute Mic B and Mic C to make sure only Mic A is part of the mix.

This way only the dynamic microphone will affect our tone.

The response of the guitar is now faster, the palm mutes and riffs sound closer and brighter.

As an optional task, we can add a “Tube Screamer” pedal before the amp in order to boost the signal before it hits the head.

The TubeScreamer will be set to add a touch of gain.

This will be helpful in making the low-end response more controlled.

And that’s it! Now you have the standard radio-ready Distorted Guitar Tone in Ampire!

Go ahead and experiment with this plugin and get that perfect guitar tone you are looking for!
