Getting started with How to Disable/Enable Tracks in Pro Tools

Pro Tools is a software that lets you produce, record, edit and mix audio performances within a “session”.

When you start the mixing procedure, you might find yourself in a situation in which you need to “disable” a track (perhaps to try other approaches), but you do not want it to be deleted permanently. You want it to be there, disabled, not consuming any CPU resources, but you want it there, just in case that you need to recall it at some point.

Pro Tools lets users disable and enable tracks with a couple simple clicks.

On this tutorial, we will learn How to Disable/Enable Tracks in Pro Tools:

 

1. Create or open an existing Pro Tools session that contains at least one track:

Let’s assume that you want to “disable” the “BASS” track.

 

 

2. Right click on top of the name “BASS” and the following options will appear:

3. Click on “Make Inactive”:

Once clicked, the “BASS” track will be displayed as greyed-out:

This greyed-out “BASS” track has been set to inactive. The associated channel strip will not output any sound and the inserts will not consume any CPU resources.

 

Now suppose you want to make the “BASS” track inactive again, re-enabling it.

 

4. Right click on top of the name “BASS” and the following options will appear:

5. Click on “Make Active”:

The previously greyed-out “BASS” track has been set to active again. The associated channel strip will now output sound and the inserts will consume CPU resources. The track is now re-enabled.
