On the modern days of audio mixing, the digital tools that engineers use in order to shape the recorded sound are called Plugins. Plugins can emulate the behavior of vintage analog pieces of gear, or simply act as clean/linear digital signal processors, performing tasks such as equalization, compression, limiting, expansion, gating, time-domain effects, etc. Studio One 4 comes with a variety of proprietary plugins that can help the user mix a music production completely “in-the-box”.

One of the most used processors that come with Studio One is the Dual Pan, which can be defined as tool that works as a fully variable stereo panner that presents parameters for input balance control, switchable pan law and independent left/right panning.

For the purpose of this tutorial, we will explain how to use the Presonus Dual Pan plugin in Studio One 4:

  1. Open or create a new Studio One 4 song:

The Dual Pan plugin window will open as:

It is easy to see from the previous picture, the Dual Pan plugin has several parameters that can be explained as:

  • Input Bal: This knob adjusts the balance of the input signal from full left to full right.
  • Pan Law: This drop-down list lets the user select the desired pan law. Options such as -6 dB Linear, -3 dB Constant Power Sin/Cos, -3 dB Constant Power Sqrt, 0 dB Balance Sin/Cos, and 0 dB Linear are available to choose.
  • Left: This knob adjusts the pan of the left input signal from full left to full right.
  • Right:This knob adjusts the pan of the left input signal from full right to full left.
  • Link: When this switch is ON, the left and right pan controls are linked.

For the purpose of this tutorial, we will use the Dual Pan to completely invert the panning of the stereo signal. The Dual Pan will be set as:

  • Input Bal: C.
  • Pan Law: -3 dB Constant Power Sin/Cos.
  • Left: R.
  • Right: L.
  • Link: OFF.

4. Apply the previous configuration, and the Dual Pan plugin should look like this:

At this point we have successfully explained how to use and configure the Dual Pan plugin in Studio One 4. The tutorial has now finished.
