Getting started with the Meter Ruler in Pro Tools

Pro Tools is a software that lets you produce, record, edit and mix audio as well as MIDI performances.

When you are producing music in Pro Tools, the default Meter is set to the standard 4/4 time signature.

However, not all music is played in 4/4, specially when dealing with more progressive or experimental types of music.

This is actually not a problem in Pro Tools, because this software lets you program your own Signature changes by using the Meter Ruler.

On this tutorial, we will explore an overview of the Meter Ruler in Pro Tools:

  1. Create or open an existing Pro Tools session:

Meter Ruler in PT

It can be seen, by default the Meter Ruler is set to 4/4:

Let’ suppose you want to add a 6/8 time signature on bar #13.

2. Locate your cursor and  playback on bar 13, making sure you are on Grid mode:

3. Click on the “+” sign next to “Meter”:

The Meter Change window will open as:

Meter Ruler in PT

This window has certain parameters that can be explained as:

  • Snap To Bar: When this is selected, the Meter Change will happen as soon as the bar starts, on the first quarter note.
  • Location: This field lets you select the place where the meter change happens.
  • Meter: These two fields let you select the time signature
  • Click: This drop-down list lets you determine the click resolution for the new meter.

For the purpose of this tutorial we will create a 6/8 time signature starting on bar #13. The Meter Change window should be set as:

  • Snap To Bar: Checked.
  • Location: 13|1|000.
  • Meter: 6/8
  • Click: Quarter note.

4. Apply these configurations to the Meter Change Window:

5. Press “OK” and the new meter will be created as:

6. Repeat these steps to create other Meter changes in your Pro Tools session as:

And that is it!

We have successfully created our Meter changes using the Meter Ruler in Pro Tools.
