Getting started with the Pro Tools Preferences Window: Display Tab

Working on a new DAW requires the user to “set the mirrors before driving”. This means, you must set the preferences of the software in order to adapt it to your personal needs.

The Preferences Window in Pro Tools lets the user set the behavior of all aspects such as the display, operation, editing, mixing, metering, etc.

On today’s tutorial we will study the Display Tab of the Preferences Window.

1. Create or open an existing Pro Tools session

2. Open the preferences window by clicking on Pro Tools -> Preferences:

4. It is easy to note how this window presents several tabs. On today’s tutorial we will work on the “Display” tab:

The Display Tab contains 3 configuration areas. These are:

  • Basics:

This area of the Display window shows all the different basic display configurations that the user can handle.

On this area, the user can enable track position numbers, tool tips, displayed language and organize the plugins and I/O menus.

  • Color Coding:

This area shows all the color coding options.

The user can enable colors for markers and MIDI note velocities. Also, the default track and clip color coding can be assigned.

  • Warnings & Dialogs

On this warning area, the user can reset the “Don’t Show This Again” settings and toggle the Dashboard window ON/OFF.

These areas conclude the Display Tab of the Pro Tools Preferences Window.

Once the settings have been applied, the user can simply press OK to apply the settings.
