On the modern days of audio production, mixing and mastering, engineers mostly use software tools to develop these tasks. Software companies develop programs designed for recording purposes, mixing purposes or matering purposes, and often, engineers might find themselves in situations where multiple programs are used in order to work on a musical production. Studio One is a software that gives the engineer all the tools and functions needed in order to record, mix and also master music.
On these series of tutorials we will be working with the “Project” page of Studio One Professional. The Project page is designed for the sole purpose of mastering albums, EPs and music productions in general. It gives the engineers all the metering tools needed for mastering, as well as the ability to apply inserts to the tracks, master fader, audio exporting features, DDP creation and disc burning capabilities.
On this fifth blog we will show the different metadata and exporting options of the Project Page.
- Open a Project that contains audio information on the timeline and all the processing already applied to the tracks:
Supposing that the user has finished all the mastering process, the following step is to add the metadata to each of the tracks.
- Locate the metadata area above the tracks list:
2. Click on the small triangle below “Artist”:
The metadata dropdown list will open as:
The user can now fill this metadata list with all the information per track.
After this procedure has been finished, the user can export the album or EP.
3. Locate the album export options on the top center bar as:
Studio One gives the user the ability to export the album or EP with four different methods by simply clicking on the icons, such as burning to disc, creating an image file, creating a DDP file or exporting as digital release. Each of these options can be explained as:
OPTION I: Burn
This option lets the user burn the masters to a disc. The program gives the user the possibility to select the burning device, speed and other burning options.
OPTION II: Image
This option lets the user create an image file of the masters. The user must select the desired format, resolution and sample rate. An option for publishing is also provided.
OPTION III: DDP
When the user clicks on DDP, the program will create a Disc Description Protocol image of the record (DDP) on the desired location within the computer. This DDP image can then be sent to a disc manufacturer for future replication.
OPTION IV: Digital Release
This option gives the user the possibility of exporting the digital files for a potential digital release. Users must select the desired digital format, sample rate, track ranges and other options such as adding track numbers and artist names to the the track names. As an added feature, the user can directly publish the released to SoundCloud.
At this point we have demonstrated the different metadata and exporting options included on the Project Page of Studio One.
