How to use the Ableton Live ECHO audio effect (Part 3 – Character)

This tutorial shows the user how to use the Ableton Live ECHO audio effect’s CHARACTER tab.

Need a Pro Audio laptop to run Ableton Live software and all of its features at its best? Check out the MC Mobile line of Pro Audio Laptops from PCAudioLabs.

On the previous tutorial we explained the basic functions of the ECHO audio effect in Live. Now we are going to explore deeper into its functions, specifically those related to the CHARACTER tab:

  1. Once the ECHO effect has been added to the track, click on the CHARACTER tab to show its associated functions as:

2. If we focus specifically on the CHARACTER tab functions:

We can see there are several new functions included on this tab. These functions can be explained as:

  • Gate ON: This button enabled the gate at the input of the effect.
  • Gate Threshold: This control sets the level that incoming signals must exceed in order to open the gate.
  • Gate Release: This control sets the time it takes for the gate to close after the signal has dropped below the threshold level.
  • Noise ON: When this button is ON, noise will be added to simulate the character of vintage analog gear.
  • Noise Amount: This control adjusts the amount of noise added.
  • Noise Morph: This control blends between different types of noise.
  • Ducking ON: When this button is ON, the wet signal is proportionally reduced as long as there is an incoming signal.
  • Ducking Threshold: This control sets the level at which the ducking will happen when the signal exceeds it.
  • Ducking Release: This control sets the time it takes for the ducking to stop after the input signal has fallen below the ducking threshold.
  • Wobble ON: When this button is ON, irregular modulation of the delay times will happen, in order to simulate tape delay wobble artifacts.
  • Wobble Amount: This control adjusts the amount of wobble added to the signal.
  • Wobble Morph: This control blends between different types of wobble modulation.
  • Repitch: When this button is ON, pitch variations will happen when changing the delay time, simulating the behavior of analog delay units.

At this point we have successfully explained the advanced character tab functions of the Echo audio effect in Ableton Live 10. The tutorial has now finished.
