Studio One 4.6 New Features – Part 5: Convert Instrument Part to Pattern

PreSonus has officially released the latest update for their flagship software Studio One, now featuring version 4.6, which can be downloaded for free from Studio One 4.5. On this tutorial we will present the new features added to this important update. The list will be divided into five blog entries, this is the fifth part.

Studio One 4.6 includes almost 30 new functions and improvements that help the traditional engineer, composer and musician as well as the modern non-linear producer.

The fifth new feature we will be evaluating is the Convert Instrument Part to Pattern function:

 

 

Let’s say you have an active Studio One song that contains a virtual instrument Part, like the one shown below:

It is easy to see from the previous picture that the Edit view shows the notes from the instrument Part from the piano roll with the velocity levels shown as the vertical bars below each MIDI note.

This part view can be easily be converter into a Pattern with the new “Convert Instrument Part to Pattern” function included in Studio One 4.6.

 

 

In order to do this, the user must right-click on the MIDI event from the timeline so the following options will appear:

From the list, click on Instrument Parts -> Convert Part to Pattern:

Once clicked, the Part will be transformed into a Pattern, resembling a 16-step sequencer:

It is easy to see from the Edit view, the MIDI information is now presented as a Pattern:

Now that the Part has been transformed into a Pattern, the user can apply all the typical pattern-based functions, step-recording and editing.
