Getting started with how to Manually Write MIDI in Pro Tools

Pro Tools is a software that lets you produce, record, edit and mix audio as well as MIDI performances.

If you are a musician or producer, you will benefit from recording MIDI performances that you can use to trigger your favorite Virtual Instruments in your songs.

But, what if you do not want to perform a MIDI part because you are not confident with the MIDI keyboard? What if you want to “write” the part?

Well, you are fortunate because Pro Tools not only lets you record MIDI performances but also “write it” manually using the pencil tool.

This can be helpful when working with less complex parts, drums and monophonic instruments in general.

On this tutorial, we will learn How to Manually Write MIDI in Pro Tools:

 

 

  1. Create or open an existing Pro Tools session:

Make sure the Pro Tools session contains at least one track with a Virtual Instrument assigned:

2. Locate the pencil tool:

3. From the top menu bar click on: Window -> MIDI Editor:

The MIDI Editor window will be opened as:

4. Locate the pencil tool from the top:

5. Click on the Pencil Tool to select it:

It will appear highlighted in blue as:

6. Using the pencil tool, click and drag on the MIDI Editor in order to create the desired notes:

As you can see, the MIDI notes have been created. You can now press play and these notes will be reproduced by the associated Virtual Instrument!
