Microphone Section in Eleven MKII

Eleven MKII is the ultimate guitar tone and gear emulation solution included in Avid Pro Tools as one of their flagship stock plugins.

This plugin is capable of emulating the amplifier, cabinet and microphone you would have as part of your real guitar setup.

Today we are going to learn more about the microphone section of this plugin, the microphone choices and the parameters included.

Let’s explore this!

  1. Open or create a new Pro Tools session

For the purpose of this tutorial we have a session that contains a single audio track with an electric guitar DI signal recorded to it.

Eleven MKII is designed to be added as a plugin (insert) on tracks that only contain DI signals.

2. Add Eleven MKII plugin to the DI guitar track (audio track):

3. Locate the bottom right of the window where it says “Mic Type”:

This is the microphone module of the plugin.

We can change the microphone type by simply clicking on top of the microphone name.

4. Click on the microphone name, where it says “Dyn 57” to show the list of available options:

From this list you can select different microphone types. The plugin gives us options from dynamic, to condensers to ribbon.

5. Select the “Condenser 67” microphone:

If you playback the track, the audible differences will be obvious because we switched from a dynamic microphone to a condenser.

You can also change the position of the microphone from “ON axis” to “OFF axis”.

ON Axis typically yield a richer high frequency response, while OFF axis yield a duller tone.

6. Switch the microphone position to OFF axis by clicking on the small switch:

Once again the audible differences are obvious.

Go ahead and experiment with these and get that perfect guitar tone you are looking for!
