Reason 11 New Features – Part 5: Multiple Note Drawing and Show Selected Notes in Key

Reason Studios has officially released the latest update for their flagship software Reason, now featuring version 11, which can be downloaded from the Reason Studios website. On this tutorial we will present the new features added to this important update. The list will be divided into five blog entries, this is the fifth part.

Reason 11 includes a good amount of updated workflow features and new devices, making this software ideal for the traditional composer, musician and also the modern non-linear music producer.

The fifth article of the new Reason 11 will review the new multiple note drawing function and also the feature that shows the selected notes in the keyboard.

 

 

Part I: Multiple Note Drawing Function

Now features on Reason Studios 11, there is a new tool added, called “Draw Multiple Notes”. Using the tool the user can simply click and drag the tool on the piano roll in order to create multiple notes of the value equal to the grid selected.

Look at the following blank MIDI clip:

If the user clicks on the Pencil tool:

The following options will appear:

If the user clicks on “Draw Multiple Notes”, the Pencil tool will be configured to draw multiple notes.

Now that this option has been selected, the user can simply click and drag on the piano roll to create the multiple notes:

It is easy to see from the previous picture how 8 notes have been created. This happened because the clip length is set for 1 bar and 8th notes have been set as the grid, therefore the pencil tool will draw eight notes.

 

 

Part II: Showing Selected Notes in Keyboard

Now on Reason Studios 11, the user can select a group of notes from the MIDI clip, and the selected notes will be highlighted in red on the piano roll so that it is easier for the user to recognize which notes have been selected.

Let’s look at the following MIDI clip:

If the user selects all the notes by clicking and dragging on them with the Selection Tool:

It is easy to see now, how the selected notes are shows on the Piano roll in color red.
