Getting started with how to use the Selector Tool in Pro Tools

Pro Tools is a software that lets you produce, record, edit and mix audio as well as MIDI performances.

After we are done with the recording stage of a production, we will get into the editing stage.

On this stage, we will be using all the Edit Tools from their associated menu.

Today we are going to be learning how to use the Selector Tool.

The Selector Tool is used to place the edit cursor in a track or timebase ruler or to make selections on the timeline. Once these areas have been selected, we can copy them, delete them or paste them.

  1. Open or create a new Pro Tools session:

2. Locate the Edit Tools menu:

3. Click on the Selector Tool icon to engage it:

Once clicked, it will turn blue indicating it is selected as:

This Tool lets us select the following:

  • Sections from independent tracks.
  • Sections of all tracks at the same time (selecting areas of the timeline).

Once areas have been selected, you can:

  • Copy the sections.
  • Delete de sections.
  • Paste the sections.

4. Select an area of the track by clicking and dragging on it:

It will get highlighted as:

5. Delete the selected section by pressing the delete key:

6. Undo that, and re-select the section:

7. Now copy the section by pressing Command+C (Mac) or Control+C (PC).

Now you can locate the selector tool somewhere on the timeline:

8. Paste the copied material by pressing Command+V (Mac) or Control+V (PC):

It is easy to see how the Selector tool lets us select certain regions of tracks, copy, paste and delete them.

And that is it!

At this point, we have successfully explained how to use Selector Tool in Pro Tools.
