How to Open Multiple Insert Windows in Studio One 4

The following tutorial shows the user a basic overview on how to open multiple insert windows in Studio One 4.

All Digital Audio Workstations give their users the possibility of setting up stock plugins and third party plugins as inserts on their tracks. These inserts are used during the mixing stage of a production in order to shape the sound of the signals passing through those tracks. The vast majority of audio recording software are programmed so that only one plugin can be opened at a time. However, Studio One 4 gives users the ability to open multiple plugins at the same time. This is important when the user is trying to understand the way the output or configuration of an insert is affecting the next one down the path of the same track for example. It can also be used when the user wants to monitor the way plugins from different tracks react at the same time.

 

This tutorial will present a basic overview of How to Open Multiple Insert Windows in Studio One 4:

 

  1. Open a Studio One 4 song that contains several tracks with inserts added:

For the purpose of this tutorial, we will demonstrate how to open the “BitCrusher” on the “KICK” track, the “Gate” plugin on the “SNARE” track and the “Limiter” plugin on the “OH-L” track, all at the same time.

 

2. Locate the first plugin that will be opened and double click it to open it:

In our case, this first plugin will be “BitCrusher” on the “KICK” track.

At this point, if the user tries to open any other plugin, the software will automatically close the “BitCrusher” window and open the next one. This tutorial will explain how to bypass that behavior.

 

 

3. Locate at the top right of the plugin window:

4. Click on the “Keep Editor Open” button, locate to the left of the “Close” button:

5. The plugin will now look like this:

Note the “Keep Editor Open” button now appears to be light blue, meaning the option is ON.

 

 

6. Locate the second plugin that will be opened and double click it to open it:

In our case, this first plugin will be “Gate” on the “SNARE” track.

7. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for this plugin:

8. Locate the third plugin that will be opened and double click it to open it:

In our case, this first plugin will be “Limiter” on the “OH-L” track.

9. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for this plugin:

The program will now look like this:

Note how all three insert windows are opened at the same time. The user can tweak all of them together if needed.
