It can be common during the writing and basic composition stage of a song to encounter a situation in which the tempo of the song must be changed on certain parts of the song in order to achieve a certain “vibe” from the production. A typical case is when the producer decides the choruses must be 10 bpms faster than the other sections of the song in order to boost the “mood” during the chorus since the pace would be increased. Studio One 4 gives the user the opportunity to do that by programming a tempo map using the Tempo Track.

This tutorial will present a step-by-step guide on how to program a Tempo Map using the Tempo track in Studio One 4:

  1. Open a Studio One 4 song:

It is easy to see how this song has a tempo of 150 bpm already assigned to it.

2.Locate the top left of the screen:

3. Click on the “Open Tempo Track” button:

4. The tempo track will now open as:

It is easy to see how the tempo is set to a constant 150 bpm:

For the purpose of this tutorial, we will raise the tempo from 150 bpm to 200 bpm at measure 9.

 

 

5. Zoom in vertically the tempo track by clicking and dragging at the bottom of it:

6. Locate the top tool bar:

7. Click on the Paint Tool:

After clicking on the paint too, it should change its color to blue:

8. At the Tempo Track locate the mouse on top of measure 9, click and drag until the tempo goes to 200 bpm:

It is easy to see now how the tempo goes from 150 to 200 at measure 9. If the user plays back the metronome, a very obvious difference in tempo will be noticed at measure 9.
