Often during the mixing stage of a production, the engineer might need to apply processing to the tracks in a parallel form. Parallel processing means that the individual tracks can be processed in any form, while an exact copy of those tracks or signals can be processed differently, ultimately blending both of them in order to obtain the desired sonic results.

This tutorial will present a basic overview of how to apply parallel processing in Studio One 4:

  1. Open a Studio One 4 song with tracks:

2. Open the MIX tab and maximize in order to see the available inserts and sends:

From the picture above, it is easy to see how the session contains four drum tracks (KICK, SNARE, OH-L and OH-R). These tracks can be individually processed if needed. However, for the purpose of this tutorial we will apply parallel compression to these tracks, including only KICK and SNARE in the parallel compression buss.

3. Locate the Sends area of the KICK track:

4. Click on the “+” sign to the right of the “Sends” word:

The following window will appear:

5. Click on “Add Bus Channel”:

6. The new bus will be created as “Bus 1”:

7. Add and configure a Compressor plugin as the insert of the “Bus 1”:

8. Click and drag the “Bus 1” send from the KICK track to the SNARE track and it will be copied:

9. The user can now modify the individual levels of the sends in order to achieve the proper input for the parallel compressor and therefore obtain the sonic results:

It is crucial to do this with the plugin window opened, so the user can see the amount of gain reduction that each signal generates.

It is also recommended to apply this compression with the sends set to PRE-FADER, so that the level of the actual fader does not affect the level of the send as:

It is important to understand, this process applies not only to compression, but any other digital audio process.

At this point we have successfully explained a basic overview of Parallel Processing in Studio One 4.
