Setting up your audio inputs for YouTube live streaming

Musicians obviously need to be able to send their audio inputs from an audio interface into a YouTube live stream, as simply playing or singing into a microphone on a webcam or laptop is not optimal audio quality. Therefore, it is important to use an audio interface to send audio into your live stream.

When you move onto this step of your live stream setup, you may be prompted at this time to allow YouTube to access your webcam and microphone:

Here, you may choose your audio interface under “Microphone to share”. If you do not choose an audio interface or microphone, you will not be able to send video and audio to YouTube.

Streaming audio on a live YouTube webstream generally only allows you to use two audio inputs on an audio interface at a time — in this case, we have a PreSonus Audiobox 44VSL, which is a 4-input audio interface. However, we’d only be able to select inputs 1/2 or 3/4 as our audio inputs — not all four inputs. This can be an issue for some folks. Unfortunately, YouTube’s built-in streaming software does not allow for multi-channel audio interfaces to easily send all audio inputs into your live stream. If you require all audio inputs on your audio interface, it may be more beneficial to utilize an adapter cable to send the headphone or sub-output of your audio interface’s stereo audio output into the stereo Microphone input on your computer or laptop, allowing you to use all four audio inputs, in this case, over simply using two.

However, if you can get by with two audio inputs, selecting your audio interface from this pulldown is a fine way to get two inputs into your audio stream, which for most creatives, will work very well.

8. Press the “Go Live” button:
