On the modern days of audio mixing, the digital tools that engineers use in order to shape the recorded sound are called Plugins. Plugins can emulate the behavior of vintage analog pieces of gear, or simply act as clean/linear digital signal processors, performing tasks such as equalization, compression, limiting, expansion, gating, time-domain effects, etc. Studio One 4 comes with a variety of proprietary plugins that can help the user mix a music production completely “in-the-box”.

One of the most used processors that come with Studio One is the Groove Delay, which can be defined as a four-tap, tempo-synced delay with variable filters and a variable beat grid. This effect can be used to create tempo-synced delay patterns.

For the purpose of this tutorial, we will explain how to use the Presonus Groove Delay plugin in Studio One 4:

  1. Open or create a new Studio One 4 song:

It is easy to see from the previous picture, the Groove Delay plugin has several parameters that can be explained as:

  • Tap Selector: These buttons can be used to enable the respective Tap parameters.
  • Beats: This knob can be used to adjust the delay length for the currently select tap, in beats. These are variable from one beat to two bars.
  • Groove: This knob can adjust the delay time relative to the beat setting as a percentage.
  • Feedback: This knob adjusts the amount of signal that is being fed back into the effect.
  • Level: This knob can adjust the level of the currently selected tap as a percentage of the input level.
  • Pan: This knob can control the pan position of the currently selected tap.
  • Filter: This button enables the filters.
  • Cut/Reso X/Y Grid: This grid adjust the cutoff frequency and resonance of the filter by dragging the point around the 2D plane.
  • Cut Mod: This slider can be used to adjust the relative amount that the Cutoff Mod LFO can affect the cutoff setting for the filter.
  • LP, Peak, HP/BP Grid: This grid adjusts the character of the filter (x axis: low-pass to high-pass; y axis: bandpass to peak) by dragging the point around the 2D plane.
  • Beatlength: This knob adjusts the Grid subdivisions by note value, variable from half notes to 64th notes.
  • Global Feedback: This knob controls the global amount of signal fed back into the effect.
  • Global Cutoff Mod: When the global sync button is OFF, this knob controls the speed of the LFO in Hertz. When the global sync button is ON, this knob controls the beats of the sync LFO.
  • Global Sync Button: When this button is selected, the Cutoff Mod LFO sync will be engaged; making the LFO speed adjustment in beats.
  • Dry/Wet: This knob adjusts the relation between the affected and unaffected signals,
  • Lock: This button locks the position of the dry/wet knob when it is ON.
  • Grid Display: The user can click on these buttons to display and edit the respective parameter for each tap in the Grid display. The different displays are: Level, Pan, Cutoff, Swing.
