Studio One 4 gives the user the possibility of grouping tracks in order to work on them together. This function is very important during the editing stage of a production, where the user must make sure that the edits are applied to all the tracks of the group. It can also be used when mixing so that the faders of the groups of tracks can be automated or modified together.
This tutorial will present a basic overview of how create and dissolve Groups in Studio One 4:
- Open a Studio One 4 song with at two tracks:
For the purpose of this tutorial we will group the two OH (overhead) tracks, which is something a mixing engineer would typically do with this pair since they are totally correlated. Working on them as a group makes complete sense in this case.
2. Click on any of the tracks of the group that will be created and it will be highlighted:
On this case, we will click on “OH-L” track first.
3. Holding command (on a mac) , click on the next track that wants to be added to the group and it will be highlighted too:
On this case, the track will be “OH-R”.
At this point both tracks have been selected and both appear to be highlighted. The user can now “group” them.
4. On the top menu bar click on: “Track” -> “Group Selected Tracks”
As soon as this happens, it can be seen from the track list of the mix tab, these tracks appear as part of “Group 1” as:
The user can now manipulate these tracks as a group. Volume automation and audio editing will be applied to both tracks at the same time.
5. (OPTIONAL): In order to dissolve the group, the user can select the tracks and then click on the top menu bar: Track -> Dissolve Group
The group has been dissolved now and the tracks can be modified independently:
At this point the user has learned How to use Groups in Studio One .
