It is very common to find situations in which a recording engineer has to set the tempo of a session prior to the recording stage by listening to the band play and obtaining a tempo value from that process. Using the tap tempo function makes this process simple because it only requires the engineer to use the mouse to “click” in order to emulate the quarter note that the software will use to calculate the bpm of the song.

 

This tutorial will present a basic overview of how to use the Tap Tempo function in Studio One 4:

 

  1. Open or create a new Studio One 4 song:

Note the actual tempo is set to 150 bpm:

2. Locate the “Tempo” word, under the bpm number:

Listen to the music playing, and get a feel of the approximate bpm trying to follow the quarter notes.

 

 

3. Click on the word “Tempo” repetitively, until the bpm info changes to match the quarter note played:

Note how in our case, the software approximated the tempo to 94.97 bpm. Depending on how fast or how slow the tempo is tapped, the bpms will change.
